Parent Survey: After School Program Input Sought by Dec. 6th

December 1, 2019 By tmasters

Heyburn Elementary is collecting input from parents in regards to the need and interest in participation in an after school program. The program would be provided for by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant. The Idaho State Department of Education is the responsible State educational agency for 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which is authorized under Title IV, Part B, of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015. (https://www.sde.idaho.gov/student-engagement/cclc/)

The program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children. The program helps students meet challenging state academic standards and local academic standards.

We first have to determine if we would have enough interest to support the program before completing and submitting the grant application. The survey is open to any parents of students enrolled at Heyburn Elementary, and also any Home Schooled students within our District.

Please complete the following survey by Dec. 6th.

A paper copy is also available this week at the St. Maries Public Library or the Heyburn Elementary Office.

We are excited about the possibilities this grant could offer and interested in all the input we can gather to help us in procuring the necessary funds!

School Store

October 1, 2019 By tmasters

Yesterday and today student will be coming home with information regarding a School Store. Now, this isn’t a store at our school where they can buy things. Instead it is a link online where people can go buy all of their usual items from online stores (Walmart, Target, Kohls), but Heyburn gets a percentage of the money spent!

This is a great way for Heyburn Elementary to raise funds without people having to buy things they don’t want or need! The funds will go to student rewards, student awards, and fun extra activities.

Heyburn’s Kindergartners Root for Happy Teeth

March 18, 2019 By tmasters

By Elise Hamblin

Did you hear them sing this song?  “Brush, brush, brush your teeth. Brush two times a day. Healthy eating, flossing, cleaning–fighting tooth decay.”  Wide smiles lit up the students’ faces as they finished their song about keeping their teeth clean. In addition to this tune, Heyburn Elementary’s kindergarteners learned several useful ways to maintain healthy teeth and enjoyed a field trip to a local dentist office.

On the first week of February, eager students swished around dental hygiene facts and the importance of eating healthy foods. Kindergarteners used x-ray vision and classified healthy and unhealthy foods into categories.  Many students remained quite certain candy belonged in the “healthy” column. Teachers had to rinse that idea out of their heads. Informative books were written, and descriptive pictures supporting the theme plastered the whitened schoolroom walls. Math lessons even implanted the concepts by using subtraction to “wipe out the cavities.”

Later in the week, students boarded the yellow school bus to visit Dr. Ewert’s dentist office. First, there was a brush with science when they learned about the jaw bone and placement of the teeth. Next, students embraced a tour of every room and how each tool was utilized.  Finally, the kindergarteners left the friendly, laid back presentation with a “goodie” bag and an opportunity to enter a coloring contest and win a prize.

As students returned to school and filed off the bus, there was a sparkle in their smile and a melody about healthy teeth on their lips.  Fun music, engaging activities, and a golden field trip crowned dental health week a shining success. Why don’t you ask them…or just listen for their happy song!
