The right to review and inspect all official records, files and data directly related to students is available to all parents and legal guardians. Additionally, students who are 18 years of age or older, have the right to review their individual records and files. The District forbids a third- party disclosure of student records unless written consent is given by the parents specifying the records to be released, the reasons for the release, and to whom to be released, or in compliance with judicial order or subpoena. Release of student records to officials of other schools or school systems in which the student intends to enroll may be released only if the student’s parents are notified of the transfer. In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, St. Maries Joint School District No. 41 gives notice to all parents, legal guardians, and students 18 years or older, that the following information is being categorized as directory information: the student’s name, address and telephone listing, e-mail address, photograph, grade level, date and place of birth, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, degrees, honors and awards received, and the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student. Directory information will be published and released by the District without prior consent of parents, legal guardian, or student 18 years of age or older, unless the parent, legal guardian or student notifies the District by the end of the first week of school that the referenced directory information should not be released without prior written consent. Such notification must be in writing addressed to the student’s building principal.
