SMMS Science Expo

February 1, 2019 By clanphear

St. Maries Middle School is holding a Science Expo on Thursday, February 28 from 5pm to 7pm in the SMMS gym.  Students may enter a science project of their choosing. This is an exciting opportunity for students to explore their personal interest in how the world around us works.  Performing experiments is a way for students to have fun while accumulating knowledge and sharing ideas with others.

The Science Expo is open to all SMMS students in grades 6 – 8.  Students choosing to participate will be eligible to win cash prizes donated by the Idaho Drug Free Youth (IDFY) group.  Each grade level will have a first, second and third place winner. Awards will be $40 for first, $30 for second and $20 for third place.  Additional prize donations are being sought and will be announced as they are received.

To get started, students need to decide on the experiment they will be conducting and complete the Science Project Proposal Form by Friday, February 8.  Science projects are to be completed during after school hours. Students will need to create a display board to present the results of their experiment.  Students may receive assistance from parents or teachers, but the project and display board must be their own work. Students need to use the Science Project R.A.C.E. format to communicate the results of their experiment.  Information about the RACE format and display board will be distributed to students after they turn in their Science Project Proposal Forms.

Students may work individually or with a student partner.  This Science Expo is not affiliated with any local or state science fairs.

Science project ideas can be found at the library or on the internet.  Some helpful sites are:

Please contact Mrs. Willard or Mrs. Tefft at SMMS with questions.  We hope this is a fun learning opportunity for all involved!
